Brain-dead management
Before I became self-employed, one of the most infuriating aspects of working life was the manager who would drop by my desk and say something like, “Why don’t you pack-up and go home early?”
It was usually well intentioned, but it invariably occurred when I was immersed in a project and racing to meet a deadline. And rather than giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling about how caring management was, it demonstrated how utterly out of touch they were with my responsibilities and workload.
If this WSJ story – about email-free Fridays — is any indication, management hasn’t learned anything since I joined the entrepreneurial class.
The worst part is that the same buffoons who urge their underlings to ignore email over the weekend will be calling for their heads when a key client is under-served or when revenue targets aren’t met.
Some things never change.
